What is Medical Transcription?

Medical transcription, also known as MT, is an allied healthcare profession which encompasses the process of transcription or converting voice-recorded reports as dictated by physicians and/or other healthcare professionals into textual format.

Each time a paitent visits the emergency room or is admitted or has an investigation done, there is patient interaction with a medical professional. Doctor dictates the patient information and that is recorded as a voice file. This voice file is transferred through internet to secure web servers.

The medical transcriptionist is the key person who "transcribes" the dictated medical information (voice file) to be produced as soft copy and the transcribed document is stored in a computer system. The transcribed document goes through a strict quality control process before it is uploaded back to the physician or hospital through secured internet lines. This document then becomes part of the patient's electronic medical record history.

As long as people get sick, injured, or visit medical professionals for other reasons, there will be a job for medical transcriptionists.

Medical transcriptionists must have a sound knowledge of medical terminology, an excellent command of English grammar, and be efficient with the keyboard.

Transcriptionists must be able to work independently, know how to research unfamiliar terms and phrases, and be conscientious workers with a good eye for detail.
